The Victorian Period had enormous changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution. The literature in the period is often thought as the bridge between the writings of the romantic-period of the century before and the new genres of literature in the industrialized twentieth century .Especially in the field of literature, the writers of the era dealt with the differences between the

economies of the upper and middle classes, and also the tragic environments of the poor. In most of the literature there also was a moral purpose that could be identified in the writings, mostly by authors such as Tennyson, Carlyle, and Browning. Literature in this period of time also focused on doubt and pessimism with oppression and prudishness, and also tried to incorporate the ideal life of humans. Poets and novelists tended to emphasize the themes and ideals such as courage, justice, love, and brotherhood by writing stories that characterized strong senses of morality. Some of the famous writers of this period were George Eliot, Charles Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, Lewis Carrol, Rudyard Kipling, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, and Thomas Carlyle, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Oscar Wilde.
Out of these writers, Charles Dickens is noticed as one of the most popular writers of all time. Dickens wrote twenty novels, including five short Christmas stories, and many travel books and sketches. His most well-known books include A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, Great Expectations

, Oliver Twist, and A tale of Two Cities. He created some of the most memorable scenes and characters that have delighted many readers. Dickens could be noticed to have had two phases in his writing career. In the first phase, after the success in the book The Pickwick Papers, he changed his course in his books to much more gloomy and serious themes. Even with the serious themes, he always wrote passages of humor in them to make his books entertaining. Some of the books in this phase were Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiosity Shop, Barnaby Rudge, and Martin Chuzzlewit. He wrote his five Christmas novels during this phase, around the 1840s. The first and most popular book is noticed today to be A Christmas Carol, which was also created into several different movies. After the first phase of Dickens’ writing career came the second phase, which developed during the 1840s. Dickens’ view of the Victorian society and the world became much darker. The humor had turned to be much more bitter, a lot of times using different forms of satire. Charles Dickens is widely known today and significant in society for his skill of engaging the readers’ empathy by relating his stories to issues people can understand through their environments and surroundings. He was able to help the readers notice the severity and the reality of certain situations even if they didn’t experience them first-hand.
Victorian Period was a time of great change and turmoil from the many scientific inventions and philosophies that revolved around England. Even with all the upheaval and change, it had been a great time period for great works in the field of literature that is well known today.
